Beauty is generally described as a characteristic of objects that makes the perception of these objects pleasant. Such objects include landscapes, sunsets, people, utilitarian objects or works of art. In a broader sense, abstract objects such as ideas, cognitions, actions, relationships, situations or memories are often also described as beautiful, which also corresponds to the colloquial use of the term "beautiful". Beauty is the subject of philosophy as well as psychology and the arts and art sciences.

Another characteristic of beauty is that it is a consciously made value judgement. This distinguishes the experience of beauty from other positive sensations such as the simple feeling of well-being or pleasure. As an aesthetic value, beauty is opposed to ugliness. The phenomenon that intrinsically "ugly" attributes are nevertheless occasionally perceived as beautiful is called the paradox of ugliness.

Beauty has both object-related and subjective aspects: On the one hand, it depends on characteristics of the respective objects, on the other hand on the aesthetic disposition (the individual taste) of the judging person. The subjective side corresponds to the saying that beauty is "in the eye of the beholder
