Gold is a chemical element with the element symbol Au (Latin aurum) and the atomic number 79. It is a transition metal and is in the 1st subgroup (group 11) in the periodic table. This group contains copper and the precious metals silver and gold. The three metals are also called "coin metals" in chemistry.
