Ship Wheel-Anchor-Heart-Boat Wheel-Love

A ship's wheel or (boat wheel or ship`s steering wheel or rudder) is a device used on board a watercraft to steer the boat and control its course. Together with the rest of the steering mechanism, it forms part of the steering wheel. Until the invention of the ship's wheel, the helmsman relied on a tiller - a horizontal rod attached directly to the top of the rudder post - or a whipstock - a vertical rod that acted on the arm of the ship's steering gear.

Together with the rest of the steering mechanism, it forms part of the steering wheel. The ship's rudder is the device on a ship or aircraft used to change direction by generating torque from the fluid flowing around it.  This applies to ships (for which the term rudder is also commonly used) with water as the flowing medium and to aircraft or airships with air as the flowing medium.  A rudder can only develop a steering effect if it is flowed around by the carrying medium (usually air or water) as a result of the vehicle's locomotion. 

The steering effect is more pronounced the more the rudder is set transverse to the direction of travel, the larger its effective area and the faster the vehicle moves within the supporting medium (air or water). On some modern ships, the wheel has been replaced by a simple toggle switch that remotely controls an electromechanical or electrohydraulic actuator for the rudder, with a rudder angle indicator providing feedback to the helmsman.
