Pregnancy is the state a woman is in when a fertilised egg has implanted in her uterus and develops into an embryo. During pregnancy, a woman's body goes through many changes to support and protect the growing child. Pregnancy usually lasts about nine months and ends with the birth of the child.

Hormones, especially oestrogens, play an important role in controlling pregnancy. The growing child receives all the important nutrients and oxygen through the umbilical cord, which connects it to the mother's bloodstream.
