Pixel, picture point, picture cell or picture element (rarely pel) refers to the individual color values of a digital raster graphic as well as the surface elements required to capture or display a color value on an image sensor or screen with raster control. "Pixel" is a combination of the abbreviations of the English words picture (colloquially shortened to "pix") and element and is often abbreviated to px. The pixels of a raster graphic are points arranged in a grid, to which a color is assigned.

Pixels are often considered to be rectangular or square. However, this is not a universally valid model concept. In terms of digital signal processing, a pixel is a discrete sample; no statements can be made about points other than pixels. This becomes clear when enlarging raster graphics: The appearance varies depending on the scaling method chosen, and the pixels of the original image do not necessarily appear as squares when enlarged.
