Northern Ireland-Tuaisceart Éireann

Northern Ireland (English Northern Ireland, Irish Tuaisceart Éireann) is a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It consists of six of the nine counties of the historic Irish province of Ulster in the north of the island of Ireland. Northern Ireland is more densely populated than the Republic of Ireland and has a higher level of industrialization. Meanwhile, however, the Republic of Ireland achieves a higher gross domestic product per capita.

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, but not part of Great Britain. In 1972, the Northern Ireland Office (abbreviated NIO) was created in London and is headed by a minister. Since 2019, this has been the Conservative politician Julian Smith. The ministry is responsible for criminal justice and corrections, policing, the care of victims of politically motivated crimes, and in the past (2002-2007, 2017-2020), when the regional government was directly subordinate to the central government, legal oversight of the authorities in Northern Ireland. There is currently no official flag of Northern Ireland.

Until 1973, the Red Hand Flag of Ulster was used as the official flag in Northern Ireland. Only in sports, the flag of Northern Ireland is used in the Commonwealth Games for the soccer team of Northern Ireland by both FIFA and UEFA, such as the 2016 European Football Championship. In addition, there was also a coat of arms. On June 23, 2016, the referendum on leaving the EU was held. In the United Kingdom, a majority voted to leave the EU, but in Northern Ireland and Scotland, a majority voted to remain in the EU. Following this result, the then Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny called for a referendum on the reunification of Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland.
