Automobile sport as a form of motor sport includes all disciplines and competitions that aim to move motor-driven and mostly four-wheeled motor vehicles as quickly or skillfully as possible. A large percentage of automobile sporting events are speed competitions. These events are usually called automobile races or auto races for short. Many of them take place on special, purpose-built motorsport racetracks, others on closed-off regular roads (see road racing). There are also off-road races for off-road vehicles. Road races on unclosed roads are usually illegal and endanger other road users (Illegal road racing). Therefore, they are not counted as automobile racing. There are various national and international motorsport championships and series for cars.
An automobile, or car for short (also Kraftwagen, in Switzerland officially Motorwagen), is a multi-track motor vehicle (i.e. a road vehicle driven by an engine) used to transport passengers (passenger cars "Pkw" and buses) or freight (trucks "Lkw").
Colloquially - and also in this article - the term car usually refers to vehicles whose design is primarily intended for passenger transport and which may be driven on public roads with an automobile driver's license.
