Virgo Baby Zodiac

Product number: N10057
Product information "Virgo Baby Zodiac"
Virgo is a constellation on the ecliptic. Virgo is the second largest constellation in the sky (after the Water Serpent). It lies between Leo and Libra. The brightest stars are said to represent a reclining person. The brightest star is Spica with an apparent magnitude of 0.98 mag. Spica is found in the extension of the Big Dipper's drawbar over bright Arcturus in the constellation Bear Keeper.

The ecliptic passes through Virgo, so the Sun, Moon, and planets pass through this constellation. Thus, at the time of the naming of the constellations in ancient times, the Sun stayed in the constellation Virgo from mid-August to the end of September, which was almost identical to the sign of the zodiac Virgo at that time. However, due to the precession movement of the Earth's axis, the time of the Sun's passage has shifted compared to ancient times. Therefore, the Sun is currently in the constellation Virgo from September 16 to October 31.  In the constellation Virgo is the huge Virgo galaxy cluster, which contains about 2000 galaxies. Several of the galaxies can already be observed with small telescopes.

The constellation is mentioned for the first time in Mesopotamia; after MUL.APIN it was known under the names MULAB.SIN or šir'u (furrow) and also under dšala šubultu Šala (god/goddess the grain ear). In scope it corresponded to today's constellation Virgo, more precisely to that part of it which is located south of the ecliptic. The heliacal rising of the constellation, around 2700 BC in the middle of August and later around 1900 BC at the end of August, indicated to the farmers the approaching beginning of the work of the new annual cycle in the fields. In MULAPIN, the goddess Šala herself bears the epithet Ear of Corn, since the rising of the constellation symbolized the final phase of the harvest (bringing in the crops). Explicitly, the Ear of Corn referred to the star Spica (Latin "ear of corn"), but because Spica was the first rising star of the constellation, the constellation was named after this star. Eric Burrows assumes (Oxford, 1926) that the change of meaning from furrow to virgin was via a Hurrian word sala, virgin. Thus, Šala had been a goddess of pre-Semitic Syria (Hurrian, subartic, mitannic) and the word Šala had been adopted by the Greeks as virgin at the latest. In the cuneiform tablets the constellation had always been designated with ab-sim (= vegetation) or comparable but never as virgin or a similar word.

The whole constellation Virgo had its heliacal rising around 2700 B.C. on August 29 and around 1900 B.C. on September 6 in Mesopotamia. Further connections of the constellation are made to Ištar, Isis or Kybele. The ancient Greeks had different interpretations of the constellation. Thus one saw in the constellation Athena, Hera, Persephone, Callisto, Dike, Astraea or Erigone. Virgo is one of the 48 constellations of ancient astronomy described by Ptolemy.

In the mythology of Mesopotamia, the constellation Virgo was also associated with Inanna from the Epic of Gilgamesh. Inanna sent the Celestial Bull to Earth to punish Gilgamesh and Enkidu. As an astronomical event, this myth found its counterpart in the sky. With the heliacal rising of the constellation Virgo, the constellation Taurus set; in the mythological context, the rising of Inanna was followed by the descent of the bull to earth, which assumed the role of the bringer of rain and the plow ox.
