Leafcutter ants are various species of ants that use their mouthparts to cut plant leaves into small pieces, which they transport to their burrows. Leafcutter ants that specialise in grass are also called grasscutter ants.
The more than 40 known species of leafcutter ants come from the two genera Atta and Acromyrmex. Their range includes the tropics and subtropics of the Americas, extending from Louisiana and Texas in the north to Patagonia in southern Argentina. In 1874, the naturalist Thomas Belt was the first to recognise what the ants use these leaves for: They do not eat the leaves themselves, but chew them up and use them as substrate to grow a special fungus from the genus Leucoagaricus on which they feed.
